When deciding on what type of feeder would be best suitable for your folding application, here’s a few things to consider.

Pile Feeder

The pile feeder is most popular on our smaller folders due to the fact that the smaller paper size is ergonomically friendly to handle making it easier to stack up while loading the machine.  Even though the pile feeder is at a disadvantage on extremely long runs by having to stop the machine to reload it, there is an advantage to loading a machine manually. If the paper is sticking together or if the paper has a curl and is causing folding issues, it can be taken care of during the loading process.

Continuous Feeder

This feeder is more common on our 26” models and up.   This type of feeder has a few advantages over the Pile Feeder.  Namely it’s a Continuous feed system which requires no stopping of production to load it.  The paper is fanned out during the loading process making one sheet a bit offset from the other creating better separation of each sheet during the feeding process which results in a more consistent feed.  The paper can also be treated during the loading process if curl or other issues creates a problem for the folder.

Palletized Feeder

This feeder has a few advantages over the other two types.  Mainly the paper does not have to be loaded manually which is very ergonomically friendly. The operator simply rolls the entire skid full of paper in with a pallet jack.  Also, the length of the feeder has a smaller footprint than the Continuous Feeder which is good for smaller size shops. This feeder comes equipped with a rear pick up feed head which is excellent for proper sheet separation during the feeding process.  This type feed system however will only run as good as the paper is stacked on the skid during printing.  The more consistent the paper is jogged coming off the press, the better it will feed on the folder.  Also with this system, the paper cannot be treated while loading if there was an issue with curl etc.

Each system has their advantages and disadvantages.  Its very import to determine which type of feeder is best suited for your particular applications.
